A Spiral Staircase Leading to the Summit


The Taihang Mountains in China are home to what is arguably one of the most impressive, and startling, feats of architecture. While there is surely a perfectly reasonable explanation (there *has* to be) for why anyone would build such an odd structure into the side of a mountain, it’s difficult to imagine any excuse that makes much sense once you’ve seen this staircase. Reaching a height of around 90 meters, this spiral staircase awaits any brave soul willing to take on the tiring journey to the top of the mountain.

Adding to the sheer awfulness of climbing this never-ending staircase to the sky, the staircase doesn’t exactly look like it was built to be sturdy. It makes you wonder whether those little sticks jutting out from the mountain are all that’s holding the structure up.
