Crossing Sweeper
Before paved roads and modern sanitation, city streets were muddy and filled with horse manure. Crossing sweepers offered a practical service by clearing paths at busy intersections, hoping for tips from the wealthy who wanted to keep their boots clean.
Though sometimes seen as mere beggars, many sweepers took pride in their work, competing for the best spots. As urban infrastructure improved, the need for crossing sweepers disappeared, along with the horse-drawn carriages they helped navigate.
