Young boys, sometimes as young as five, were sent up narrow chimneys to clean soot. Their small size was perfect for the job, but many suffered injuries, burns, or even suffocation, making it a brutal, exploitative task.
Public outcry eventually led to legislation banning child chimney sweeps and promoting safer mechanical alternatives, marking an important victory for child labor reform.
