Fragments and Fear

Mark pretended to remain calm, all the while listening closely. He could only catch bits of the call—words like “urgent” and “discretion”—but even those fragments hinted at something troubling. Emily spoke softly, barely above a whisper, and nodded repeatedly while scanning the room with wide, unsettled eyes. The energy was tense, and Mark’s unease continued to grow.

When Emily suddenly hung up, her face had gone pale, drained of emotion. She didn’t explain a thing to Mark, didn’t offer an excuse. She simply rushed out the door. Her abrupt exit only fueled Mark’s rising suspicions. Whatever was going on, it wasn’t something she wanted him to know about. He knew he had to follow her.
