Monkey Bridges (Vietnam)
Vietnam’s monkey bridges are considered some of the most dangerous bridges in the world due to their precarious nature. Typically constructed from bamboo logs, they often feature a single handrail, if any at all. The rest of the bridge is equally rudimentary, adding to the constant fear of the bridge collapsing or slipping and falling. The name “monkey bridge” comes from the balancing act required to cross them, resembling a monkey traversing a tree.
Locals are generally accustomed to these bridges and cross them quickly and with apparent ease. Monkey bridges aren’t all made of bamboo; they come in various materials and designs. For example, some are crudely fashioned from palm trees, while others have no handrails whatsoever. What they all share is enough clearance underneath to allow boats to pass.
