6. Honduran White Bat (Ectophylla alba)
The Honduran white bat is a tiny, pure-white bat with bright yellow ears and nose, no bigger than a golf ball. It lives in the rainforests of Central America and builds its own “tents” by cutting the veins of large leaves.
What leaves grown-ups speechless is its tent-making skill. The bat chews the leaf ribs so the sides droop down like a private umbrella, then huddles inside with its colony. Its white fur reflects sunlight and helps it stay cool. Parents over 40 who thought bats lived in dark caves are stunned by this “cotton-ball bat” that engineers its own leafy condo every night.
