Eyebrow Removal

During the Middle Ages and into the Renaissance, it was fashionable for women to shave off their eyebrows and even their hairlines. A high forehead was seen as a mark of intelligence and aristocracy. Some women used pumice stones, tweezers, or even vinegar to achieve this look.

Famous portraits from the era show women with blank, smooth brows and domed foreheads. This trend eventually faded as beauty ideals shifted, but it reflects how even removing facial features became part of status and allure. Like many trends, eyebrow removal prioritized symbolism over natural appearance.
