Xoloitzcuintli

The Xoloitzcuintli – pronounced “sho-lo-eats-KWEENT-lee” and often simply called Xolo or Mexican Hairless Dog – is an ancient breed revered by the Aztecs as a spiritual guide for the dead into the afterlife. Known as the “dog of the gods,” the Xolo is a vigilant watchdog and an exceptionally loyal companion. Its robust, smooth skin and high intelligence make it a unique breed.

However, this deep loyalty comes with territorial behavior and overprotective instincts. Its striking, mythical appearance can be intimidating – but it doesn’t have to be, provided it is properly trained. The Xolo requires consistent, expert guidance from an early age, which is why many experts recommend it only to experienced dog owners.
