Old-fashioned hygiene practices that are anything but clean

Castles might look all majestic and whatnot, but their moats often hid a pretty gross secret. Instead of sparkling water, they were usually filled with sewage and garbage – human and otherwise. Basically, they were open-air garbage dumps.

Without modern plumbing, servants just chucked everything – from food scraps to the contents of chamber pots – straight into the moat. Kinda hard to imagine anything less royal than a stinky moat full of trash, innit?
