Leeches were used to treat almost every disease

For centuries, leeches were considered a cure-all. Doctors believed that drawing blood would restore the balance of bodily fluids. So, they would apply dozens of leeches and let them suck for hours.

As medieval as it sounds, it was a serious medical practice. Ironically, it further weakened many patients or caused infections. Nevertheless, leeches were long considered the epitome of medical progress.
