Pots Served as Toilets
Centuries ago, houses didn’t have bathrooms – instead, chamber pots sat beside the bed for nighttime emergencies. In the morning, the contents were either disposed of by the individual or taken away by a servant.
As convenient as it was, the stench was overwhelming – especially with multiple pots of waste sitting in the bedroom all night. Hygiene standards were shockingly low – but for many, that was just everyday life.
