These days, a quick squirt of minty mouthwash is all it takes to freshen up after a garlic-heavy meal. But back in the 18th century, folks resorted to a far more gag-inducing remedy: urine. Thanks to the ammonia it contained, it was considered a disinfectant and, supposedly, even a teeth whitener.
This practice wasn’t exactly new – even the ancient Romans were all about it. While it might’ve theoretically worked, the mere thought of it today is repulsive enough to kill your appetite. Thankfully, oral hygiene has come a long way since then.
