King Charles VI Believed He Was Made of Glass
The French king Charles VI suffered from a bizarre mental illness known as “glass delusion.” He believed he was made entirely of glass and would shatter if touched. He wore specially reinforced clothing and even banned people from touching him abruptly.
His condition worsened during times of stress, making his reign particularly unstable. Though it sounds absurd today, glass delusion was not uncommon in medieval Europe. Still, it’s wild to think that one of the most powerful men of the era walked around terrified of bumping into furniture.
