An Uneasy Tone

Concern flickered across her face. “Is everything alright?” she called out toward the back room, trying to sound casual. For a moment, she wondered if she’d made a mistake coming to this shop. Maybe she should’ve picked one of the more modern-looking stores across town.

Mr. Harris responded quickly but not convincingly. “Yes, yes, I’ll be right there. Just checking something!” His tone was rushed and slightly strained. Though he was trying to appear calm, the edge in his voice gave him away. Melissa could sense it—something was off, and the air around her started to feel heavier with every passing second.
