Frozen Foods That Were Once “Fresh”
“Freshly frozen” sounds like a contradiction, but it’s a common label in the frozen aisle. Many so-called fresh items, like fish or pastries, are flash-frozen shortly after harvest or production and thawed before being placed in the “fresh” section.
Retailers rebrand these items to command higher prices or meet buyer expectations. You might be buying defrosted shrimp as “fresh catch” without realizing it had a deep freeze journey. Always ask when the item was thawed—if the staff can’t answer, it’s probably older than you think.
