Krampusnacht – Austria
If you thought Christmas was all candy canes and carols, Krampusnacht will change your mind. In Austria and parts of Germany, people dress as Krampus—the demonic goat-like creature who punishes naughty children—and roam the streets on December 5th. Bells, chains, and switch-wielding monsters fill the night.
The costumes are terrifying, with elaborate horns and demonic masks. Parades often involve simulated kidnappings and mock beatings, much to the delight (and horror) of spectators. It’s not for the faint of heart, but Krampusnacht is a cultural cornerstone—both a spooky warning and a twisted holiday tradition.
