Fireball Festival – El Salvador
During the Fireball Festival in Nejapa, El Salvador, residents hurl flaming balls at each other in a reenactment of a volcanic eruption and a battle between good and evil. Participants soak their fireballs in kerosene and ignite them before charging into fire fights that light up the night sky.
Surprisingly, injuries are rare due to precautions, gloves, and protective gear. Still, the idea of willingly throwing fire at your neighbors feels insane. The event honors Saint Jerome, who—according to legend—fought off demons with fire. It’s beautiful, terrifying, and leaves every observer thinking: “How is this even legal?”
