Polterabend – Germany

Before German weddings, there’s Polterabend—a custom where friends and family smash porcelain plates, sinks, and even toilets in front of the couple. The engaged pair then cleans it all up together, symbolizing teamwork and resilience. And yes, it happens on purpose.

The sound of smashing china is said to drive away evil spirits. What’s left is a chaotic mess of well-wishers breaking things in the name of love. It’s oddly heartwarming, deeply noisy, and definitely strange. No glass, though—broken glass is bad luck, and apparently too weird, even for this event.
